The City of Kosciusko and Attala County have declared February 18, 2023 as Bill Bailey Day to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his homecoming as a POW in Vietnam. Ms. Rita Bailey-Brown came to City Hall this morning to accept the Proclamation on Mr. Bailey’s behalf.
Commander James W. Bailey was born in Kosciusko and grew up in Attala County. After attending the University of Southern Mississippi he joined the Navy as a Naval Flight Officer. He was later deployed to Southeast Asia in 1966 where he flew combat missions until his aircraft was shot down in Vietnam in 1967. Bill was kept as a POW at the “Hanoi Hilton” for 2063 days (five years and eight months) before being released during Operation Homecoming on February 18, 1973.
We want to express our appreciation to Bill and all veterans. These men and women are the reason we enjoy our freedoms in America.
