Approximately 6 months ago I met with Calhoun Co Supt. of Education Dr Lisa Langford about putting School Resource Officers (SROs) in the schools. We both were faced with the same issue, funding. We had been led to believe that there may be funding coming from either the state or federal level but that didn’t happen.
Dr Langford called me last Thursday and asked to meet Tuesday of this week to discuss it further. The next day, Friday August 12th, was the incident of students with a weapon at the alternative school in Calhoun City.
Tuesday(8/16) we met and Dr Langford and the Calhoun Co School Board had come up with funding to hire 3 SROs. One for Bruce, one for Calhoun City and one for Vardaman. The SROs will be full time certified deputies that will be assigned to the schools. Days when school is not in session they will be on patrol in the county.
Wednesday we had a scheduled budget workshop with the Calhoun Co Board of Supervisors. At that meeting I made the announcement to the BOS and amended my annual budget request to include extra one time funds to help equip the three new SROs. Our Board was extremely open to this and I appreciate their support.
Now we face the task of finding three qualified individuals to fill these positions. Be patient as we go through the legal process of doing contracts between boards and the hiring process. Just know that WE ALL are working on it.
In the meantime you can help. I now need 3 law enforcement vehicles. As you all surely know vehicles are hard to find and more expensive than ever!! If you know of any agency that has some to donate, an individual with deep pockets that needs a tax write off(possibly), a business that would be willing buy or donate or a civic group that would like to help raise funds for the most worthiest of causes, PLEASE CONTACT ME ASAP.
Full time certified law enforcement officers can apply now at CCSO.
Thank you
